P is for ... Piggybank

I shake my fading piggybank
and in the rattle of spare coins
my childhood jingles.
Penny by penny,
we built a happy account,
ringing with love and laughter.
The idea of collecting
scrapes of cheer
has long faded.
And piggybanks now run dry.
Occasionally, my nephews
spill the one I had
and happy moments roll out.
Amidst the singing of coins,
we share a tale or two.

  1. Love that -- it brought back memories of my white kitten bank, made of iron and taken apart by a long screw in the back. I still have it. I kept special coins in it -- old ones, foreign ones, and a smushed penny -- they are still inside my white cat!

    1. Oh I am so glad that you can relate so well. I had three : blue with a mickey mouse painted over it and a lock, a red square where the pennies used to disappear and then an earthen pot which will have to be cracked and opened. I don't have the heart to do it.

  2. The piggy bank I remember was a yellow cat. It was the early 70's and my husband forgot my birthday. It was Sunday and most stores back then were closed. However, True Value Hardware store was open. My husband ran over there and they had a small accessory department. He found an ugly wooden planter and the yellow cat. I wasn't very happy that day and he never forgot my birthday again.

    1. Thank you Betty for sharing such a sweet moment with us. I am sure that piggy bank is more important for the love it holds. Priceless.

  3. I had a brass piggy bank, which I opened more than a few times to shake out coins for candy. I wonder what happened to the piggy.

  4. Ruby, this is one of my favorites. Who among us didn't have a piggy bank as a child? Now people throw pennies away. I can't do that!

    1. Thank you Sarah. I am so glad you enjoyed reading this. And what a wise thought: a penny saved is definitely a penny earned. Piggy banks taught us this. Inculcated this as a habit.
