Midnight reverie

Reflecting the wonder of the night sky, this naani poem invites us into a celestial reverie where divine grace appears in enchanting imagery. With scattered sequins, calligraphed constellations, and twinkling stars at night embellishing the midnight canvas, the verse reminds us that even in darkness, beauty and order prevail. It gently asserts that the divine presence illuminates our lives, filling them with hope, wonder, and nurturing light—a timeless message of grace, comfort, and celestial embrace.

Sequins scattered,
constellations calligraphed
on the midnight black.
Thy grace in our lives.

Lost in the stars

Lying on our backs,
in summer blankets,
gazing at the dome of the sky,
the stars and constellations
sprayed like fine glittering Mukaish.
Our silences talk.
The sky lights up
with the ecstatic dance
of a shooting star.
Hasty forget-me-not wish.
Quick stay-by-me-always wish.
And then I fall asleep.
Cozily nestled on your arm.
Such perfect Kodak moments.

Beacon

I detest the dark,
do not favor the umbra,
that somber mystique.
The rays of light beckon me,
I breathe the morning splendor.

Equinox

The sweet caress
of summery breeze,
the mild susurrations,
the stirring of dried,
dead papery foliage,
and the buds of life
deriving strength to bloom
from this decay.
The day beginning to stretch,
till it grows weary
and seeps into twilight
and the night hastily shrinking,
excitedly merging
into the reddish hues of dawn.
This desire of the day
and the yearning of night
blending magically in equal portions.
Their thirst quenched,
satiated in
vernal, verdant, vibrant
spring equinox.
And the blossoming love.

Eventide

It should so happen
that one eventide
you come
and sit by my side.
And we spend the day-end
reveling in togetherness.
In the simple intimacy
of just being there.
Gradually, at the sunset,
the blue and the red interweave,
and the purple of the twilight grows thick.
Smudging into night.
And it should so happen that
this nightfall blends into nightfall.
This dusk into dusk.
That eventide,
when you come and sit by my side,
there should be no dawn.
How I wish!

Creases

It was early.
Even for day-break.
But since you had to leave
for a business trip,
we woke up way before dawn.
I headed straight to the kitchen.
Luke warm water
with generous dollop of honey.
Your morning ritual.
Springs you right in action.
You skipped the tea today.
With deft hands,
sure and confident,
you readied yourself.
Had a silent scanty breakfast
and left.
I looked around at the empty room,
and breathed your presence.
In the registers you worked late.
In the uncapped pan you wrote with.
In the hand towel carelessly hung at the bed-head.
But mostly in the creases of the bedsheet.
I traced the contours,
the remnants of the night
and I guess I blushed.
Then without setting them straight,
I lied down on the unmade bed
and embraced the wrinkles.
And it was like you never left.

The color of night

What is the color of night?
Black. Obviously.
But isn’t it the red of passion?
Vibrant and exciting.
Or streak of orange,
releasing inhibitions.
exuding happiness, joy.
Perhaps uplifting yellow burst
of youthful energy.
The vulnerable pink?
Tender. Nurturing.
Wait! The loyal blue.
No! Verdant green.
For all one knows, black,
seductive and secretive.
Or may be it isn’t black at all.
Possibly the compassionate indigo.
Or the very sophisticated grey.
Perchance, warm and earthy brown.
May be it is a palette of colors.
A dash of this, a stroke of that.
But what truly is the color of night?

Sleepless

The night closes in.
People retreat,
to love and laughter.
Out there somewhere,
you are still on vigil.
Even though I yearn
to be tucked in tight with you,
sleep eludes me.
Fear saunters by,
gripping at the fringes
of my mind,
and the what-ifs
weigh me down.
So, I sit and gaze,
aimlessly,
at the screen of my phone,
brave-half praying
for the damned thing to ring
so I can sleep
to the lulling comfort of your voice,
and the timid-half
hoping it wouldn't buzz.
Why, oh why,
is it so hard to sleep
without you by my side?

September night

In the quiet stillness
of September night,
I sit by my chosen spot,
soothed by the moist gentle breeze.
A tired neighbour makes his way,
slow and cautious,
as the street light has failed
for the umpteenth time.
A man pedals a bicycle,
secures it in the verandah
and locks the wicket gate,
turns around one last time
before switching off
the light in porch and
retreating to the safe insides.
The sentry on vigil,
visits periodically,
the staccato of his walking stick,
loud against the hushed darkness.
In such quiet and still
September night,
our laughter rings in air.

Musings

Sequestering hug,
like entwined vines on trellis,
weave through our being.
The trail of your touch,
stirs varied kaleidoscopes.
Alas! The day climbs.

Visit by ma

I was at page 214
when I succumbed to slumbers.
For the umpteenth time.
Unknowingly. Automatically.
The edges of my spectacles
digging painfully under my eyes.
Wincing, I woke up.
Bright white light overhead,
an open book beneath.
Ma used to visit my bedroom silently,
closing my books,
removing my glasses,
turning off the lights
and running her hands through my hair.
Then, I left home.
To make something of my life.
While 14 years later,
I am not sure if I succeeded,
I definitely miss those silent visits.
Grudgingly, I let sleep over power me.
Emotions, however, can wait.

The conquest

The eventide dissolves
in the receding moonlight.
The dawn seeps into the world,
twirling delicately into the arms of night,
the touch sends deep resounding ripples.
Quickened pulse, the staccato
and silence.
The moment blends into infinity,
and while they hold their gaze,
their hearts falter.
The illicit thrill, feverish and hesitant,
consumes the night
and the dawn burns bright
in perfect rapture.
A thousand dreams
glitter in diffused light.
Soon, it will be twilight,
and the yearnings will blend
in timeless symphony,
unrestrained and passionate.
Such is the hypnosis of seduction,
the day will dwindle in rustic hues,
as the night comes gliding,
through sultry evening roads.

A stranger on road

It was good to meet her. 22 days ago, we were all huddled up together under one roof. Amidst the chaos of renovation ( read cement dust and wood splinters scattered around us), we celebrated her bday. And soon thereafter we said our goodbyes. This is how our associations with each other had come to an abrupt end. When the paying guest arrangement had been suddenly made dysfunctional, we all had to look for new accommodations. And so we moved out. In groups of two. And today was our get-together. Over fried and tandoori momos, we spilled our experiences and shared our hearts. Until the glowering scowls of waiting crowd and descending night forced us on different routes once again. We ran a couple of errands and finally walked back to our new niche,  planning our dinners. (Yeah, when it comes to eating, we do have more than healthy appetites. And then we wonder about all those weight loss plans). Hurried steps soon brought us to the busiest road crossing. We cautiously crossed one lane and were waiting for the traffic on the other lane to become manageable before weaving our way across. The stream of cars seemed endless. Loaded with shopping bags, the two of us were getting a little impatient.  The market was no longer buzzing. The early evenings of winters had cast a shadow of hush and quiet and we wanted to get back to the room at the earliest. We were getting late with each passing minute. And then all of a sudden he stopped his car. Right in the middle. Oblivious to the honking horns behind him, he smiled and waved us through. Clear path. Before I could comprehend anything, my friend had already dragged me half way across. Only when we had safely crossed the lane, he resumed his drive, immense gratitude following him to wherever he was headed.
